This convertible brooch is a highly collectible "cameo habillé" or “dressed” cameo in which the subject of the cameo is wearing a miniature piece of jewelry -- in this case her own genuine diamond necklace.
The cameo is of a very fashionable woman of the 1920s, carved in exquisite detail — her hair is bobbed, and the diamond in her necklace highlights an old mine cut diamond.
Finely worked in 3 layers, the top orange layer of the shell is used to highlight the head band in the woman's hair and the bodice of her dress.
The cameo has a bale allowing it to be worn as a necklace and its original pin and period fold over locking c-clasp, marked 14k, is in perfect working condition. *Chain in picture not included.*
The cameo measures approximately 1 7/8" x 1 5/8" and weighs 14.6 grams.
